- 2017 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch - USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain (4/19/2025)
From my late father’s cellar, the untouched six pack of this wine was a Christmas gift for my mom several years ago. They never opened a bottle together. Tonight I opened one to share with my mom, and it was really fine. Primary fruity, but not at all over the top like the blueberry milkshake 2001 and 2003. Some oak, but not so that it obscured the fruit. Gentle tannins, and a deep finishing plumminess rounded it out. Just a pleasure to drink with lots of time left for further development. Nice to share mom’s favorite red wine.

{checks notes} no Leslie West, no Felix Pappalardi, no cow bell... must be a reference to Howell MOUNTAIN?

I thought of Mountain, but missed that this is Howell. Kudos to Mark.
