WTN: Leave Wehlenough Alone

by David M. Bueker » Tue Apr 29, 2025 7:41 pm

  • 2014 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (4/29/2025)
A touch more evolved than my bottle a few years ago, but still very fresh, and the balance is trending even brighter as more of the remaining baby fat ages away. In a beautiful place right now, but with at least 10 more years of positive aging potential depending on personal preference.

For reference, this was my prior note.

  • 2014 Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (2/28/2022)
Popped and poured at cellar temp (54 degrees F), this announced itself in a classic style, with measured sweetness, brisk acidity, and a cool, zippy finish. The fruit stays in the green and yellow zones, and there’s a little bit of sugar coating, like dusting a slice of lime with powdered sugar. The aftertaste heads towards yellow grapefruit, without ever veering into bitter territory. This feels and tastes like Kabinett, even if it’s objectively big for what that pradikat meant in the early 1990s.

Indeed a great title. I have a few 2014s (unlike 2013 where I have almost none), but again little sense of vintage. I think after 2012 I thought I need a little break from Riesling buying.,
