WTN: Albarinos for Angelenos

by Jenise » Mon May 05, 2025 7:08 pm

A blind tasting of six albarinos in Los Angeles last weekend:

2023 Sete Cepas Rías Baixas Albariño
Almost identical in color (very little) and sweetness to the Garzon also served at this tasting. Not a fan. Group 4th, my 5th but only because the Garzon was even more vapid.

2023 Bodegas As Laxas Rías Baixas Lágrima Bágoa do Miño Albariño
Fullest body of six albarinos, more saline than sweet. Very attractive, would be fantastic with fried chicken. Group 3rd place, my 3rd place.

2021 Pazo de Barrantes Rías Baixas Gran Vino Albariño
Fantastic nose, best in the line-up. Lightly perfumed, delicate but hinting at more with lingering complexity that builds on the finish. Very beguiling. My contribution to the event, my 1st place, group 2nd. Was my only bottle, and I'd love to round up more. $50ish but worth it.

2023 Vionta Albariño Rías Baixas
Good body and heft, my 2nd place, group 5th (what's wrong with those people!)

2023 Celdina Rías Baixas Albariño
Extra bright with moderate complexity. Group 1st place, my 4th.

2024 Bodega Garzón Albariño Reserva Maldonado
Weakest wine in a tasting of six albarinos, and there's nothing reserve-ish about it. Light and sweet.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Right on...a tasting I would have enjoyed.
