WTN: A robust Morgon

by Tim York » Wed May 07, 2025 12:15 pm

Morgon, along with Moulin-à-Vent, has the reputation of being more age-worthy than most other Beaujolais crus. Indeed I remember being served a 20 year old one which was still drinking well without being outstanding. However, I have recently had a lot in a quaffable early drinking style. This one from the Jadot stable is more ambitious but I don't see its going on for 20 years. Like well sourced 2022s from most of France it is delicious young.

2022 Louis Jadot Morgon Roches Noires Château des Jacques - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (06/05/2025)
As usual from this source, this is a Morgon in a serious "grand vin" vein. There are quite rich fruit with a savoury tinge, earthy notes, leathery hints, more structure than in early drinking cuvées and suave but discreet oak patina. Very good.

Nice one. I think I still have some older Chateau des Jacques. Need to go look.

Indeed. I'm a big Morgon fan but haven't drunk much of the Jadot over the years.

I enjoy Morgon and do believe that they are more long lived than some other Bojos -- I still have 2017 and 2018 Burgaud Cote de Py I must get into. Thanks for inspiring me to open bottles! :D

Quick trip to the cellar determined that the 2009 Jadot is buried. Will have to grab it in the fall.

Did find a 2010 Burgaud Morgon, so that’s on tap for tonight.

Another Morgon fan here. I don't drink as much Lapierre as I used to when Marcel was still alive, but in return I've upped my consumption of Foillard.

Last weekend a friend opened a 2018 CdJacques. FAIL! My notes: black, high acid, nasty.

My Burgaud Morgon is not so pleasant either. Hard, drying tannins. Beaujolais is supposed to be fun. This wine isn't.

Yes, Burgaud always seemed too stern for me. Although I didn't try very much, given all the other delicious options.

I have never bought any more after the batch of highly disappointing 2010s I purchased. They never showed well.

I dumped this bottle.

Yes, I think it was around that period that I tried them as well. Maybe they've improved since then.

The only Burgaud I own is a Cote-Rotie. I'll put it up against your Morgon to see which is the lighter-bodied wine
