1994 Rust en Vrede Estate Red Wine Stellenbosch - I hadn't opened one of these for a few years so this one was a pleasant surprise. It is a made from varying amounts of cab sauv, syrah and merlot and it seems to age very gracefully. This one was still fairly dark, with a nose of spicy, peppery (the syrah speaking?) red fruit, and as they use French oak it was a decent ringer for something European, and it had a long clean finish. Showing no signs of senescence, it drinks like a good California wine of similar age, though smoother than many.
