WTN: A killer Semillon

by Jenise » Sat May 17, 2025 9:36 am

Opened this last night:

2023 Andrew Will 'Cuvee Lucia' Semillon, Washington
Very pale yellow color. Crisp, clean, vibrant, so complex and dry that blind I'd have guessed French white Bordeaux over anything from North America. Outstanding paired with the chicken with artichokes and vermouth sauce I made for dinner.

Sounds like a great wine and delicious food!

100% Semillon or a dash of SB in there as well?

Don't know. The label didn't indicate any additions, but of course up to 20% would be legal.

Did a little sleuthing, and it looks like Cuvée Lucia can be either a Sauvignon Blanc or a Semillion depending on vintage, and any details I could find show a blend that flips back and forth.

Actually, he makes both. In '22 and '23 at least, he made both a SB and Semillon. This is my first experience with his straight Semillon. Which makes one wonder where the term 'cuvee' fits in; all I can answer is that he makes a whole series of wines named Cuvee Lucia, after his daughter. His son Will is the winemaker of record these days and has brought the winery back to excellence from a long lull that resulted from Chris Camarda's depression over the death of his wife.

That at least makes some kind of sense. Of course there was zero info on the winery website.

Except that his wife was 6'2". It's repeated several times. But if you want what their idea of 'cuvee' is, it's not there.
