WTN: Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Rare 2002

by Jay Labrador » Thu Jun 05, 2025 12:09 pm

Just hitting its stride. I remember this being really tight a few years back. Now so generous, just a touch over medium bodied. Fresh, citrussy, just a hint of marmalade. A bit of smoke, nuts, and great length. Still many years of life in this but what a joy to drink now.

Finished my 1990 a couple of years ago - it was showing some signs of age but was still delicious!

I really like the 2002 PH Rare, though the blingy bottle is a bit embarassing.
I notice they are now basically trying to market it as a separate brand, never mentioned PH

Oh, I was not aware of that! I had a quick look at the PH website and it seems it's not among the wines there.

Ownership hasn't changed, just branding. Here is text of a dinner I got invite to:
Dear Champagne Lover,

It is with great pleasure that we announce a very RARE opportunity to taste multiple vintages of one of the very best Prestige Cuvees in the Land. We will have 4 vintages of Rare Champagne Millesime, and 2 vintages of Rare Champagne Millesime Rose to be paired with an exceptional Omakase dinner at one of the hottest new restaurants in NYC, Ito! Ito is an omakase restaurant that seats just 16 people...and we took over the whole place to welcome RARE Champagne to New York, as we roll out the Champagne carpet!

2013 Rare Champagne Millesime

2008 Rare Champagne Millesime (out of magnum)

2006 Rare Champagne Millesime (out of magnum)

2014 Rare Champagne Rose

2012 Rare Champagne Rose

2012 Rare Champagne Millesime (new rel

I think they're trying to position it like Cristal is to Roederer.

Aha! So that explains that email that I also got. I had no idea what Rare Champagne was, figuring it to be some new, blingy venture (and not far wrong, I guess).
