WTN: Solera Sangiovese? Yes!

by Jenise » Thu Jun 05, 2025 1:00 pm

Met a friend for pizza at a new natural wine bar in Bellingham. The 'natural' wasn't a draw for either of us (she works in a wine store and knows better), but the pizza was rumored to be the best in town and we had to find out. The pizza was the real deal, and this wine wasn't bad either!

I'm not only not into natural wines, I eye them with suspicion because, just for starters, the ideology is so often out of line with flavor and quality. Mice in my wine? No thanks! But this one's very good. Apparently a solera process (they call it vino perpetuo) is partially involved in blending sangiovese, barbera and negretto, and the result is seamless in a way that's fresh but not overtly raw or youthful. Medium bodied, both red and black fruit, complex, ready to drink when the glass cap is removed, and it stayed interesting to the last drop three hours later. Liked it a lot.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
