WTN: Rosé from Bordeaux

by Tim York » Sun Jul 13, 2025 7:13 am

There are two shades of pink produced in the Bordeaux region and by this estate. First, the "normal" pale rosé like the one below and, second, Bordeaux clairet which is a much deeper pink with rather more body and is something like what "red" Bordeaux used to be before the late 17th century when bottling under cork began to permit the ageing of the much darker more tannic age-worthy wines we know today. (In England, Bordeaux reds are still referred to as "claret".) If I see a Bordeaux clairet on the shelves, I will grab it.

This is a refreshing change from the standardized rosé de Provence. Slightly fuller than those with a nicely fresh and elegant Atlantic edge to its fruit, apparently CabFranc in a majority over Merlot. Add to that a gently floral overlay and moreish acidity and enough grip on the finish and we have a good pink and good value at c.€8.
