  • 1999 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve - Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra (7/19/2025)
From my late father’s cellar, this was in excellent condition. Still deep red, with very little bricking, the aromatics were all dark berry and spice, with just a bit of cedar. Medium plus palate weight, and as long as I kept the wine at cool room temp the alcohol was readily held in check. Silky finish that showed a bit more of the spice element, and sustained very well. Having never tasted a wine from this producer before I was unsure what to expect, especially considering the region and era, but I very much enjoyed the wine.

Sounds great. I don't have a ton of experience with Penley Estate, but I have always thought of them as one of the more classic Coonawarra producers.

Ditto. And '99 was a great vintage, one that got overlooked because of the more-heralded '98 that ushered in the Parker era of Aussie wines.
