Nice Burmese meal (no wine) in Burlingame, then red eye back to NYC. A bleary Sunday, but grilled some squid and had squid salad, first local corn of the year, and kale.
2019 Lauer Kupp Fass 18 Grosses Gewachs
Lovely, sweet pear fruit and tart grapefruit, spicy and smoky. Dry but not austere, crunchy minerally wine that I think is delightful. Light on its feet but not without power. A-
Monday was a small ribeye, salad, eggplant
1996 Pierre Bouree Gevrey-Chambertin
‘96 acids on full display, modest dark fruits, the acids seem to overwhelm and I never really got in the groove with this bottle. B-/C+
No wine Tuesday before a trip into the city
Wednesday was park concert, lovely weather -warm but low humidity. The band (Rama) bills itself as prog rock/fusion rather than straight jazz, a nice change (and they did a good cover of “Locomotive Breath:, which I appreciated as the cringeworthy “Bungle in the Jungle” was on radio as I went to river). Took a seafood salad, dry sausage, golden beets with chevre and tarragon, smoked mussels. Sat with friends, good times though less wine sharing than usual:
2024 Cibonne “Tentations” Cotes de Provence Rose
Strawberry, red cherry, light touch of herbs, gentle acids. Doesn’t really say Cibonne but a perfectly quaffable Provencal rose. B
2017 Fevre “Vaillons” Chablis 1er
Nice and bright, tart apple and orange zest, apple blossoms, a saline minerally finish. Long and complete, pretty classic. B+/A-
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
