Had my brother in law over for a cold dinner on a hot night on my patio yesterday. With shrimp terrine and roasted tomatillo and guajillo salsa:
2019 Savage Grace Blanc Franc Red Willow Vineyard Washington
Bottle age has done wonders for this white cab franc. Earlier bottles were fairly lean, that is, but now the herbaceousness is joined by racy white nectarine and rambutan fruit. A great showing.
We had just finished when the left side neighbor passed some fresh caught and still warm from the cooker Dungeness crab over the fence, so we also opened:
2019 Maison Morey-Coffinet Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Frionnes Blanc Chardonnay
Premox!!!!! Dark ugly yellow, severe oxidation.
Not wanting the crab to wait any longer, we did without wine temporarily; then the neighbor on the other side invited us over for a glass of:
2021 K Vintners The Boy Grenache Powerline Vineyard
I'm totally not a Charles Smith fan, this is one of his brands, and most bottles of Charles Smith wines others have poured for me have failed to impress. But I liked this! Raspberry and tayberry fruit with hints of orange peel, rhubarb and pie spices. Medium bodied with good acidity and no over-arching alcohol--very much what I'd hope for in a new world grenache.
