WTN: Three This Weekend....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Aug 17, 2025 6:07 pm

Susan & I shared these three over the weekend:
1. Ruth Stock Pot GrunerVeltliner Cuvee Zero Rancho Corda/RRV (11.5%; U/U; www.RuthLewandowskiWines.com; natural wine) Ruth Lewandoski/Geyserville 2022: Orange/brownish very cloudy/murky color; strong phenolic/skin-contact/resinous very strong natty/funky/rather unclean slight GV/floral rather unpleasant nose; very tart/tangy quite sour strong skin-contact/resinous very natty/funky/unclean slight GV/floral flavor w/ some tannic bite; a very unattractive natural wine in all its worst features; for folks who drinking natural wines is more important than to drink good/flavorful wines; no GV character to speak of; a wine to avoid if good wine is important to you. $31.00 (KK)

2. Scarpone DOC: Abruzzi Bianco (12.5%; VillaItalia Wines/SanFrancisco) Icorf/Morro d'Oro 2023: Light gold color; very fragrant/perfumed quite floral/carnations/gardenias very slight stony/mineal almost Austrian R-like flavor; very long/lingering floral finish that matches flavor; quite rich & lush for an Abruzzo white; a lovely white at a great price. $22.00 (KK)

3. Bloem Syrah/Mourvedre WoO: Simonsberg-Paarl/SouthAfrica (13.5%; www.BloemWine.com; Canopy Wine Slctns/Piermont/NY) Simonsberg-Paarl/SouthAfrica 2021: Very dark color; strong plummy/blackberry/Mourv quite earthy/loamy/compost pile rather rustic/coarse not very attractive nose; strong earthy/loamy/SouthernHemisphere/compost pile rough/rustic some plummy/Mourv/ripe/boysenberry bit oaked flavor w/ some coarse tannins; long finish that tracks flavor; lacks the high-toned character you'd expect from Syrah; a strong earthy/loaamy Mourv that's not very attractive; speaks strong of Southern Hemisphere. $12.50 (KK)

More slikascort from TheBloodyPupit:
1. I really liked the Scarpone for the price. Lots of aromatics from an area that doesn't often show that much aromatics. It is made from Trebbiano or Pecorino, but most likely the first.

Sounds like that gruener veltliner is a perfect illustration of why the "unnatrual" vinification processes were invented in the first place. Your tasting note didn't mention fizziness so it looks like there's a wine fault or two they forgot to include. At least you won't have to worry about the bottles exploding.
