Two more older Calif Reds we tasted at Pig+Fig this week:
1. ScherrerWnry Old&Mature Vines (14.5%; Plntd: 1912) ScherrerWnry/Sebastapol 1997: Med.light color w/ some browning; fairly cedary/pencilly/oldZin classic mature DCV Zin/raspberry/smokey fairly complex very attractive nose; fairly tart/some metallic fully mature DCV Zin/raspberry some vanilla/pencilly/Am.oak bit dried out quite cedary some complex flavor w/ light astringent tannins; very long bit dried-out finish that follows flavor; a bit dried-out on the palate but still gives some pleasure; much like some of the old Swan Zins of yesteryear. $27.00

David Caffaro PetiteSirah DryCreekVlly (13.9%; EB; U/U; 75% PetiteSirah/14% CabSauv/11% Carignan; 250 cs) 1998: Dark color w/ some bricking; fairly cedary/pencilly/oldRed some blackberry/boysenberry/ripe PS strong toasty/Am.oak bit peppery/PS fairly complex nose; lightly tart ripe/peppery/PS/plummy strong vanilla/oak rather spicy bit drying/astringent some complex flavor w/ light drying tannins; long blackberry/peppery/PS finish that follows flavor; more like a high-toned Zin than a clunky PS; some drying out but still in fairly good shape w/ good fruit.

1. Two good examples of mature Calif reds a bit beyond their peak. I followed David Caffaro from the very start. We used to buy quite a lot of his wines way back when. He would offer them on a futures basis before they were even harvested at a substantial 50% discount, making them an extremely good buy. I should go back & revisit his wines.
