WTN: My 1st Surrey, 1st Rybeyrenc, + other wines by river

No wine Tuesday with swordfish, spinach, and squash

After 3 rainy Wednesday in a row, we got lucky with a beautiful day (sunny and low 70s , 60s after sunset) for last park concert. Friends picked me up so I didn’t need to spit. I brought ceviche (scallop/shrimp/avocado), pate de campagne, cheeses, and caprese.

Still white
2022 Fichet Bourgogne Blanc
Pear and apple, touch of iodine and chalk, ripe but with nice underlying acids, very good for level. B+

Bubbles
(vintage or NV?) Denbies Reserve Brut
I’ve had Kentish sparklers, my first Surrey wine, Nice mousse, fresh green apple, lemon zest, nice persistence. B/B+

2017 Turenne Camille Brut Rose (Vin de France)
Never had a Provencal bubbly before, not eager to try more. Coarse, flat red berry fruit, a little metallic edge to finish. C+/C

Still Roses
2024 Henri Bourgeois Sancerre Rose
Sweet strawberries, fairly low acid for rose, clipped finish. Not a fan, but fun to share with some guys I visited winery with last year. B-/C+

2024 Koehler-Ruprecht Pinot Noir Kabinett Trocken Rose
Ripe cherry fruit, a little menthol note, moderate acids, ok finish. B-

2024 Brundlmayer Zweigelt Rose
Light and fresh, strawberry/rhubarb pie, slight hint of petillance, I liked. B

Still red
2024 Thierry Navarre Rybeyrenc (Languedoc)
New grape to me (Fred brought it back from his new place in Provence), very bright red color, light, red berries with anise, quite peppery. Fun. B+/B

Beautiful evening by the river with sunset over the Palisades, a collection of old friends who have mostly been scattered for summer, my kind of night.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
