WTN: Loves me like a Rocks

by David M. Bueker » Thu Aug 28, 2025 8:05 pm

  • 2011 Edmunds St. John Rocks and Gravel - USA, California (8/28/2025)
Two 2011 Rhône Rangers on consecutive night, and both in a similar ready to go spot. Dusky red fruit, worn leather, the dust of a long dry trail - it all adds up to a classic ESJ Rhône blend. Not so much of the sweaty, feral nature of Cotes Sauvages, but that just makes it more drinkable. Maybe a little more Mourvèdre would amp up the gamy notes, but this is plenty earthy for a California Rhône. Drink now and for the next ten years.

"Dusky red fruit, worn leather, the dust of a long dry trail". Very evocative description!

It either comes to me while drinking the wine or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t I am not really interested in writing a note anymore.

I had a very nice Riesling GG this week, but it didn’t evoke anything.

I've still got a bottle or two of the '11R&G, and looking forward to tasting again soon. It's interesting, this week to have tasted the two Ligne du Tablas bottlings from Fenaughty Vineyard, and feeling that eerie sense of finding something in the wine that would have made me wonder, had I been tasting blind, whether it might be something I'd made myself, 14 years earlier. (Please feel free to experiment with the syntax of the previous sentence :))
