WTN: Two Older Calif Viogniers....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Fri Aug 29, 2025 1:47 pm

We tasted these two Viogniers at our Pig+Fig tasting of older whites:
1. Fenestra Viognier (11%) 2001: Deep gold color; slight pear/Viog some nutty/smokey some pencilly bit herbal/SB-like fairly complex quite interesting lovely nose; bit soft slight aged/metallic some pear/Viog/floral light earthy/dusty bit pencilly/nutty complex flavor; very long finish that tracks flavor; not a lot of youthful Viog character but quite a complex vaguely aged RhoneWhite; a lovely example of a mature Viog that's more like an aged Chard; no signs of oxidation or over-aged character.

2. TerreRouge Viognier Estete/Fiddletown (14.5%; www.TerreRougeWines.com) Bill&Jane Easton/Fiddletown 2014: Med.gold color; very strong fresh/pear/peach/Viog/floral quite perfumed/fragrant slight nutty/pencilly/smokey fairly complex nose; lightly tart rather rich/lush strong Viog/floral/pear/peach fairly fresh/youthful somewhat gentle slight nutty/pencilly lovely complex youthful flavor; very long/lingering finish that tracks flavor; still fairly youthful & not showing a whole lot of evolution; should go another 10 yrs.

More vigglestitt from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Viogniers are not supposed to age. These two Viogs beg to differ. I was expecting Lanny Replogle's Fenestra Viog to be pretty shakey. It was nor at all & no signs of an imminent demise. Not a lot of Viog character but really quite interesting a bit like an aged Chard sort of way.
The TerreRouge was distinctly Viog, rather youthful, and showing a modest amount of evolution.
Of these two, I liked the Fenestra (slightly) better because of its greater complexity.
