1986 Cuvaison Cabernet Sauvignon - on the lookout for bottles nearing end of life, I grabbed my last bottle of this to accompany the Friday night steak, - the last time I'd opened one was in 2012. It came out of the bottle showing not much in the nose and on tasting was acidic and lacked fruit, which was no big surprise, but after being exposed to air for a half hour it changed completely, adding weight, fruit nd length. It was quite decent for about a half hour and then started to close down again and faded out. Probably a lesson about opening a bit before drinking and then monitoring development so you don't wish whatever it turns out it can show. I probably bought this at the winery 35 years ago.

I've got quite a lot of California wines from the 80s and 90s and intend to put them on the Friday night steak menu from now on. I expect a few disappointments but also a fair bit of excellent old wine.
