WTN: Wendouree and Spottswoode

by Jay Labrador » Thu Sep 04, 2025 10:06 pm

Two lovely reds at today's boozy lunch and post lunch drinks.

Wendouree Shiraz Malbec Cabernet Pressings 1997 (damaged label) was still a bit firm when opened but that resolved after 30 minutes in the glass. Quite dry, all tertiary notes - black olive, mushrooms, and leather. Perhaps just past peak but it will be fine for many years yet.

Post lunch Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon 2004. Voluptuous, rich, full of primary fruit, generous oak. I would not guess this was over 20 years old if served blind. More like a ten year old except maybe for the softness of the tannins. Very long life ahead for this one.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Nice note on the Spotteswoode, a producer I've always loved. '04 wasn't a popular vintage here because the wines didn't initially show enough fruit for the Wine Speck crowd, but people with faith have been rewarded.

Yep - 2004 is a lovely vintage for people who like wine rather than fruit cocktail.

Liked Wendouree on few times I tried (where's Salil?)
Liked Spottswoode in 20th century, not sure I've had one from this century but this makes me want to look.
