WTN: Frescobaldi Montesodi Toscana IGT 2016

by Jay Labrador » Wed Sep 24, 2025 3:58 am

Apparently in some years labeled as Chianti Rufina, and in other years as Toscana IGT. 2016 is IGT.

Pretty tannic even after a double decant. Aired in the glass for 3 hours thereafter. Garnet. Meaty, spicy, woody, nose. Not much by way of fruit as far as aromas go. Pretty full in the mouth. Sour cherry, raspberry, strawberry. Wood spices - cinnamon etc. Very dry. Still pretty tannic. Coffee-ish finish.Good length. Good, but could surely be better with more time. Leave alone for maybe 5 years.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Interesting that the designation changes. I wonder what they do such that it has to change.

A quick search shows it as 100% Sangiovese, so that's not it (that's been allowed for a long time now, since the 90s);
Maybe the vineyard extends outside Rufina, and sometimes they use the non-Rufina grapes?
Or, looking at pics on CT, wonder if just marketing. Older ones seem to be Chianti Rufina. Then there's a short streak of Toscana, before newer ones Chianti Rufina Riserva. Can't see all, but doesn't seem to go back and forth.
Thanks for the notes
