WTN: Riesling, NSG, and Champagne at Twin Tails NYC

by Dale Williams » Thu Oct 30, 2025 1:54 pm

Tuesday went to Twin Tails, where they had invited the chefs from Soothr & Sappe for a collaborative evening. Place was buzzing, we had our usual round table - raised so great views of Central Park and beyond. Food was fantastic.

2008 Bollinger Grande Annee
Apples, peaches, and a touch of hazelnut Big style, I liked, others loved. B+/B

Agrapart Avizoise (2019 release)
Green apple, chalky rocks, long mineral and citrus finish. Jayson says not as good as 2013 and 2016 releases but I like a lot. A-/B+
.
Waygu Tartlets
Endive with a spicy fish sauce salad (Laab Pla)
Miang Prawns skewers with lettuce wraps

2007 Roederer Cristal
Corked!

2007 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne
Just like a bottle a few weeks ago, great showing. Pear, lemon creme pie, a gingery note. Long chalk and brioche finish. A-

Royal Dorade Sashimi
Cilantro grapefruit salad
Thai Chicken Nuggets with creme fraiche and caviar

2009 Keller Abtserde Riesling Grosses Gewachs
Big but vibrant, spicy with lime and blood orange , wet rocks, so complex. A-

Pork with egg noodles (Pad Mii Yaowarat)
Crab Fried Rice

2006 Mugnier Clos de la Marechale Nuits St George 1er
Black cherry, tar, earth, still a bit wrapped in its tannins. B/B+

2005 Chevillon Vaucrains Nuits St George 1er
Starts quietly but really picks up steam, red and black cherries, smoke, a touch of cocoa. Still plenty of structure (both tannic and acidic), but drinking well. I’m holding rest but no sin to drink now. A-/B+

2005 Georges Mugneret (Mugneret Gibourg) Chaignots Nuits St George 1er
Red berries, cocoa, flowers, elegant and concentrated. Young but lovely. A-

2005 Hudelot-Noellat Murgers Nuits St George 1er

Most open of the 2005s, red fruit and spices, hint of sandalwood, but some development ahead. B+

Grilled Stuffed Betel Leaves
Chicken Spring Rolls
Cho Lon Duck

2023 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Kabinett
Really gorgeous young Kab, racy and refined, long. A-

Sauteed Dover Sole
Peekytoe Sandwich with fries

2012 Vilmart Coeur de Cuvee
This was poured as I was rushing out for a train, but my quick taste was quite pleasurable, racy acids with surprisingly tropical fruit.

Really fun and different night with great group

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Another great lineup of wines, Dale! It gives me an idea for a themed tasting: similarly named Burgundy domaines:
Mugnier/Mugneret
various Magniens
Chevillon/Chevillon-Chezeaux
various Rossignols
the myriad Gros estates

As I say this, I am almost certain it's already been done. Oh, well...

Well there are a few things going on. Similar names, but also family members, distant and close, plus former estates divided, etc. Lots of theme possibilities, I think Dale recently posted about one with the two Cotats.

Sorry, I'll edit. It's Domaine Georges Mugneret (Mugneret-Gibourg). I'm lazy and when I say Mugneret I mean the sisters (like if I say Dauvissat I mean R&V). I'll try to do better!:)

Funnily as to similar sounding name, the restaurant was busy and a bit loud, and when I asked for the Mugneret I was passed the Mugnier.
