WTN: Beaune Blanc and Volnay

by Dale Williams » Fri Oct 31, 2025 1:17 pm

Monday roast fennel chicken on cabbage, no wine. Tuesday was Twin Tails, separate post

Wednesday pork bulgogi, rice with furikake, gingery sauted wawa choy.
2005 Huber-Verdereau “Les Robardelles” Volnay
(this is a village wine). Red fruit, a touch of spice, some tannin, but a little tired ashtray note. OK though disappointing for a 2005. B-

Thursday halibut with salsa verde, Japanese sweet potato with miso butter, leftover cabbage
2023 Jean-Claude Rateau "Clos des Mariages" Beaune Blanc
New producer to me. Pear, white blossoms, hint of citrus, fresh acids, no apparent oak. Nice chalky finish with a wet rock edge. Will buy again. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Did you get from CSW? They've been long-time champions of Rateau. He was one of the biodynamic pioneers in France/Burgundy, starting in the late 70s (and apparently Clos des Mariages was the first biodynamic vineyard in Burgundy). I've had some fun bottles but overall very mixed results with the red wines, and I don't think I'm alone in that, so I have not been inspired to dig too deeply. Not sure if I've ever had his white wines, but glad you had a good one!

yes, it was an add on to a CSW order (was just looking for under $40 white burg). Glad I tried, and will buy again, but will not being looking for reds.
