WTN: Three New Bedrock Whites....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Dec 04, 2025 6:30 pm

We tasted these new Bedrock whites at Pig+Fig ystrday:
1. Bedrock Cuvee Karatas SonomaCnty WW (14.0%; Semillon from BedrockVnyd; Plntd: 1880's) 2024: Med.light gold color; strong Semillon/figgy/bit herbal quite aromatic slight dusty/OV classic Semillon bit complex nose; fairly tart rich strong Semillon/fiffy/bit herbal somewhat saline flavor; very long Semillon finish that tracks flavor; a bit one-dimensional right now but an attractive Semillon that will develop that waxy character in 5-10 yr; quite a good example of a young Semillon. $45.00

2. Bedrock Compagni-Portis SonomaVlly/SonomaCnty WW (13.8%; Plntd: 1954; Field blend of esoteric whites; Aged: 5 mo. in SS & neutral brls) 2024: Light gold color; light earthy slight floral/R-like some perfumed slight pencilly some complex nose; rather tart/tangy some floral/R-like bit chalky/earthy/metallic some complex flavor; very long floral finish that tracks flavor; a bit on the rustic and reminds of a old-timey Calif R/GreenHungarian, a bit like a Sudtirol R; a wine that may become very interesting w age. $39.00
________________
3. Bedrock Chard BieNaidoVnyd/SantaMariaVlly (13.0%; Own-rooted OV) 2023: Med.gold color; very strong melony/Chard/bit appley some pencilly/oak spicy some complex nose; lightly tart quite rich/lush strong melony/Chard/appley/spicy bit pencilly/oak bit dusty/OV lovely rich flavor; very long/lingering finish that mimics flavor; shows a bit of Bourgogne Blanc character; reminds a lot of the ABC Chards w/ less oak; will benefit from age for 5-10 yrs; a well-structured expression of Chard. $45.00

1. I really like the Bedrock white wines. They seems to age quite well. They don't get the respect they truly deserve.

While I am not so much a fan of their white wines as you, they are generally excellent.

I assume the Karatas is what used to be Caritas? At that point it was Semillon/Sb blend.

Probably the same wine. They just mentioned the Semillon in the release newsletter.

Karatas has been Karatas at least back to 2010. It was the name of Morgan’s dog.

Also, the release letter does mention SB along with the Semillon as per usual.

From the release letter:
In 2024, we received such a small amount of Semillon fruit from the ancient vines at Monte Rosso that we couldn’t make a single-vineyard wine from it. That turned out to be great news for Cuvée Karatas, as we ended up co-pressing the fruit from the 1880s-planted, mountainside vines with Semillon from Bedrock Vineyard.

The co-pressed lot was then blended with selected barrels of Sauvignon Blanc from Bedrock and Judge vineyards, which contributed both perfume and electric acidity to balance the natural weight and texture of the Semillon.

Yeah, they had to alter the name. You can figure out why.

Interesting sounding wines, though I honestly don't remember anymore what a Green Hungarian tastes like. Does anyone still make it?

Virtually nothing on CellarTracker.

Remember that Tom was at the Feast of Cana, so some of his reference points are a little old!
