WTN: Et tu Brunate?

by David M. Bueker » Wed Dec 31, 2025 1:49 pm

  • 1996 Marcarini Barolo Brunate - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (12/30/2025)
Bought on release, but perhaps cellared a little too long. This was nice enough, but there was no “spark.” The aroma was lovely (floral, leather, a bit of earthiness), but on the palate it was simultaneously still tannic and yet flat. Tasted OK, but nothing particularly interesting. I really enjoyed smelling it, but that’s only half the process.

I have a small store of 96 Barolos and have found some are doing exactly what your apparently had done while others (e.g. Seghesio La Villa, Pira Margheria holding well. I left a couple a tad too long (Poderi Roset) and the have started fading. Sounds like yours was worth the space just for the nose.

I have both 96 Brunate and La Serra, will check on.
But no matter the wine, kudos on the title

Oops - just checked my cellar list - have lone bottle of 1989 Vietti Barolo Brunate. Methinks that straggler may well be over the hill so I have added it to the 'table of shame' where suspect bottles await drinking.

"Table of shame"... Love that concept, Bill.
