WTN: Not the Good Red Planet

1996 Bonnes Mares, Bouchard Pere et Fils
Bouchard Pere et Fils was in the 1980s a significant under-performer. The domaine changed hands in the mid-90s and IIRC 1996 was one of the new regime's first vintages. I recall the 1996s being at first release an excellent vintage of deeply colored and strongly structured wines. But I was still surprised by the deep color of this one. Definitely a mature shade of red, but I'd never guess it was 29 years old. Complex, if a bit shy, classic aromas. Complex and powerful flavors, tannins fully resolved but a touch of acidity poking out. Long finish. Decant this one well ahead of time or it will be closed in. I'm not sure which direction this wine is going. Curly Larry with a touch of Moe.

1996 is such a weird vintage, and not just in Burgundy. German wines from ‘96 can be excellent, and also decidedly weird!
