WTN: Two Older Calif Reds....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Jan 05, 2026 2:54 pm

Had these two CA Reds over the last few days:
1. TheOjaiVnyd PinotNir FeCiegaVnyd/Sta.RitaHills (13.0%) Oakview 2014 Med.color w/ much bricking; strong toasty/oak/smokey light PN/black cherry/cherry slightly Burgundian some cedary/pencilly/old Red some complex bit tired nose; lightly tart/tangy/metallic rather tired/bit dried out slight pencilly/Burgundian black cherry/PN strong toasty/oak/smokey slight complex flavor w/ light/gentle tannins; long cedary/pencilly/tired finish that mocks flavor; still has some pleasant old Burgundy character but pretty much on its last legs.

2. Ridge Zin BoatmanVnyd/Jake'sBlock SonomaCnty (14.2%; 11 brls produced; bttld 12/2016; Drk: 8/16-8/21: JO; 1.5% water addition/tartaric aci) RidgeVnyds/LyttonSprings 2015: Med.color w/some bricking; pleasant light raspberry/Zin some Am.oak/vanilla light earthy/dusty/OV somewhat quiet nose; soft bit astringent/dried out light spicy/raspberry/Zin some vanilla/Am.oak light earthy/dusty/OV bit cedary/pencilly/old Zin flavor; med.chort slight raspberry/Zin rather drying/astringent finish that mimics flavor; still a bit ofZin fruit hiding in there but a bit dull/tired & headed downhill.

More sittlefret from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The Ojai PN was pretty dull/tired/old Red upon opening. By the next morning, it had lost a lot of the tired/dried out character and staged a remarkable comeback, w/ a lot more Pinot fruit coming out.

I am struggling with the idea that the Ojai was past its best, but was that when Adam was in his “Parker influenced” phase?

The Ridge Boatman wine has never once impressed me.

David, I think after about 2007 Adam, if he'd ever had a Parker-influenced period, had changed direction, and was following his own path, for sure.

Cool. Thanks. My info on Adam dallying with bigger wines comes from Bob Lindquist in his interview on the Bedrock Wine Conversations podcast.
