WTN: Geezer

  • 2015 Ridge 50th Anniversary Geyserville - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (2/8/2026)
Served alongside our Super Bowl taco bar, so not getting the full attention it deserves, but a very good to excellent Geyserville that is not yet into adulthood. Lots of dark zinberry fruit, and of course the Ridge oak markings, but there is so much substance that there is more than enough runway for this wine to finish integrating the oak, and maybe climb into the top tier of Geezers.

Quite long lived - I opened a 95 about a year ago and it was in great shape!

Yeah, I am not worried about aging these. I still have two bottles of the ‘97 buried somewhere.

I've finished the three 2015s I had.

Last night I took my last 2016 to a steakhouse; it was wonderful and while it may age further it was such pleasurable drinking now that I wouldn't hesitate to open another soon. If only I had some.

PS: Interesting you headed this 'Geezer'. That's the way Geyser is pronounced in the UK, but in when I was in California it was pronounced Guyzer.

“The Geezer” is the common nickname for the wine among U.S. wine geeks. When using the full name it’s definitely “Guyzer.”

Peter, it's a little-known fact that David harbors a carefully hidden passion for the music of Black Sabbath. This tasting note thus stands as a sly homage to Geezer Butler, their longtime bassist.

Interestingly, when we went to Iceland we visited what they claimed was the original geyser, "[The Great] Geysir", after which all others were named. In Icelandic it IS pronounced "Geezer". The original vent is actually dead, but there's a younger version a few feet away, connected to the same underground plumbing.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geysir.
