WTN: Four Barolos....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Feb 12, 2026 1:49 pm

In our tasting at Laura's Pig+Fig last Wed, we tried these 4 Barolos:
1. Carretta Schiavenza Dd'OCG: Barolo (15.00%; GrapeExpectations/Richmond/CA) Pira Luciano/Schiavenza 2020: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; rather earthy/dusty mostly pungent/road tar very light Nebb/floral nose; lightly tart bit lightweight rather earthy/dusty/pungent some road tar very little Neb/floral/fruit flavor w/ rather hard/coarse tannins; a rather coarse/rustic/hard/rough Barolo w/ little Nebb fruit; not a very good example of Barolo and unlikely to evolve into anything profound. $57.00 (SFW&S)

2. Ioppa Dd'OC: Colline Novaresi (12.5%; Nebbiolo; GiulinaImprts/Boulder) Gianpiero & Giorgio/Romagnano Sesia 2023: Med.light color; very pretty fragrant/Nebb/floral/violets/slight rose petal very light pungent/road tar slight licorice some complex nose; lightly tart bit lightweight very pretty/floral/Nebb/violets very slight tarry/pungent flavor w/ light tannins; very long floral finish that mocks flavor; quite a pretty lightweight Barolo that speaks mostly of Nebb/floral fruit; nothing profound & a small step above a Langhe but quite a pretty Barolo. $22.00 (SFW&S)

3. Cascina Vengore Belgardo Dd'OCG: Terre Alfieri (14%; Nebbiolo; WineBridgeImprts/Davis/CA) Cascina Vengore/Cisterna d'Asti/Piemonte 2023: Med.dark color; strong classic Barolo fairly floral/lilacs/violets/Nebblight earthy/pungent/tarry slight pencilly quite lovely nose; fairly tart/lean/tannic rather Nebb/floral/violets light punget/roadtar lighter/less extracted bit complex flavor w/ some rough tannins; lighter less extracted more floral more angular more delicate than the Mignane. $35.00 (SFW&S)

4. Cascina Vengore Mignane Dd'OCG: Terre Alfieri (14%; Nebbiolo; WineBridgeImprts/Davis/CA) Cascina Vengore/Cisterna d'Asti/Piemonte 2023: Med.dark bit darker color; very similar nose but a bit less floral/Nebb aromatics more earthy/road tar/smokey bit more pencilly/oak more complex nose; deeper richer/lusher more intense less sharp/angular bit less floral more pungent/road tar more extracted bit richer/lusher bit softer/rounder flavor w/ more rich/ripe tannins; very long/lingering richer/riper expression of Nebb; quite a good/classic expression of Nebb; a very good Barolo at a very fair price. $46.00 (SFW&S)

More fissturbiz from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Cascina Vengore is a new wnry in the Terre Alfieri region in the Roero started in 2012, so not technically a Barolo, though they do make an authentic Monte di Stefano Barolo. It was a new wnry to me. I was fairly impressed by these two wines as excellent expressions of the Nebb grape. A big step above most Langhe Nebbs. And fairly priced.

More like 1 Barolo, and three Northern Piemonte Nebbiolos .

Colline Novaresi is northern, but think Terre Alfieri is south of Asti. It's a new DOCG, basically reds used to be labeled Nebbiolo d'Alba and white Roero. And I'd guess most producers just still label that if possible, better known. But definitely not Barolo!
