Here's a wine I loved

by John S » Tue Feb 17, 2026 9:02 pm

The wine I had last night fits well into the 'wines you love' month. I drink mainly whites, and I drink a fair bit of riesling. I'm getting more and more into the dry rieslings from around the world. Its nice to get one from your own country too (this one in the Niagara region of Ontario). And minerality is one of favourite traits in many wines, but especially riesling. This pulsated with minerality and acidity and was low in alcohol - about 11%. I love low alcohol wines too! So this struck many boxes in the types of wine I love to drink.

2020 Thirty Bench Riesling Small Lot Steel Post Vineyard

Light gold in colour, and the very nice nose has minerality and citrus notes. Very dry on the medium bodied palate, with great intensity from the acidity and minerality. A mix of lime, tangerine, pear and apple are there, but its the lovely minerality, acidity and balance which make the greatest impression. A lovely dry Niagara riesling from a great vintage that is drinking well now but will last quite a while (A-).

Nice! I haven’t seen any Niagara wines in my area in years. A local shop used to carry a small, but well managed selection, but I think I was the only person who ever bought any.

And I will heartily second the low alcohol comment. I love wine for the aromas and flavors, not the buzz, so low alcohol means more love and less ugh.

I can't not say I don't enjoy the buzz, but less buzz is certainly better. My first complaint, though, is the taste.
