WTN: Beautiful Clean Cole

by David M. Bueker » Wed Feb 18, 2026 8:57 pm

  • 2021 Desire Lines Riesling Cole Ranch - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (2/18/2026)
Followed over two evenings, this is a fascinating wine, as it bridges the continental range of North America and Europe. Full bodied but with moderate alcohol, it shows pithy pink grapefruit and herbal notes, alongside tree ripe orange and lime. Texturally I am reminded of Grosses Gewachs wines of the Nahe and Rheinhessen, with the finishing flavor palate leaning more California. Compelling stuff that will be interesting to follow over the next several years.

Sounds better than any California Riesling I've had!
But mainly applause for the Subject line

The Desire Lines Rieslings are really a huge step up. Cody Rassmusen knows what he is doing with the grape. I've blinded professionals on his Rieslings twice, and both times the guess was an area in Germany.

Would have been better if it was a Wyoming Riesling.
