WTN: A Home Run from Steve E ('20 El Jaleo)

by Mark Lipton » Fri May 01, 2026 10:31 pm

On another cold Spring night here in the Midwest, we had some reheated venison-black bean chili for dinner. In need of a suitable wine to accompany, I went down to the cellar. I have been loathe to open my dwindling supply of ESJ wines since I know that no replacements are likely to come my way, so it was somewhat reluctantly that I brought forth a bottle of 2020 Edmunds St. John El Jaleo. I am happy to report, though, that my decision was not an unwise one. Wow! I cannot imagine that this wine will be any more appealing than it is tonight. Bright red cherry fruit bursts from the nose. It is silken on the palate, with absolutely smooth mouth feel. The fruit is deep and the acidity in perfect balance in this medium-bodied wine. It's a triumph of winemaking and a pleasure to drink. Thank you, Steve.

Wonderful! I do enjoy the El Jaleo. It’s not a R&G replacement, but it scratches the ESJ itch. I also adore the label.

Thanks for the report, Mark. I've got two bottles left.

I bought/have a couple of early vintages of Jaleo (2016 & 2017?) but don't think I ever saw 2020. Liked the wines though,

I have multiple bottles of the 2018 and 2020. I'll be very interested to see how they develop with age.
