Monday shrimp puttanesca and broccoli
2011 Selbach Oster ‘Schmitt” Riesling
Betsy said the puttanesca was pretty hot so wanted some RS, but got more than I bargained for. Easily Auslese, with some botrytis, with moderate acids. Peaches, apricot, honeycomb, still plenty of baby fa richness. Long finish.. C for dinner match, B+ for wine if positioned correctly

Tuesday mussels with chorizo, potatoes,
2025 Can Sumoi La Rosa
Strawberries, white peach, saline, nice flavors but could use a touch more acid and depth. B-

Wednesday no wine with gnocchi, snap peas, and mint with whipped feta, with asparagus side

Some friends invited over to their apartment (with lovely view of the Hudson and the TZB) for dinner.
Oysters, octopus conservas, and artichokes on crackers
NV Ponson 1er Cru Champagne
Peach, apple, a touch of the rye bread meets almond note I often get on P Meunier (this is 70% PM, 15% PN, 15% Chard). Lively fresh and long., B+/B

Zuni cafe chicken with bread salad, eggplant with a olive/pistachio topping and a tomato caper one.
2005 Muga Rioja Reserva
Ripe red fruit approaching kirschy, vanilla, not very long. I’m generally a Muga fan but didn’t love this. B-/C+

2025 Domaine du Fossile Chinon Rose

A bit lighter in style than the Baudry Chinon rosel but lovely in its own way. Raspberry, strawberry, and orange zest, flower and zesty. Tangy chalky finish. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Back when Selbach first introduced the Schmitt bottling it waffled back and forth between Auslese and Spätlese. Makes sense given the process where they block pick all the vines. Since 2010 I have only ever seen it as Auslese, though confusingly the pradikat wasn’t always on the label!
