WTN: Al fresco dinner w/Bdx, Burg, CA, Tuscan, Champagne

by Dale Williams » Mon Jun 29, 2026 10:15 am

Betsy was unable to attend an event at the Omega Institute last week, but 2 friends who did (and one husband) came for dinner on a lovely Fri evening. A nice dinner on the patio:

Garlic scape/white bean dip, Ron’s home smoked salmon
NV Grongnet Blanc des Blancs Champagne
Green apple., rye bread, bright acids, elegant mousse, good valure. B/B+

lobster/tarragon/citrus salad
2007 Ridge Estate Chardonnay
Still going strong, sweet apple., peach, some light oak notes. B

2014 Fevre Montee de Tonnere Chablis 1er
Great acids, lemon and green apple, chalk and seashell. Very long. A-/B+

Flannery strips, pasta with green puttanesca, salad
1998 Ch. du Tertre (Margaux)
Cassis and dark berry,, cigarbox, good balance. This isn’t the longest or more complex claret, but satisfying. B

2004 I Greppi Greppicaia (Bolgheri Superiore)(375 ml)
A bit roasted, plummy dark fruit, tannin. B-/C+

And watermelon to close!

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Nice line up. 2014 Chablis is so good.

Interesting that an '07 California chardonnay is holding up so well, wouldn't have bet on it .
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I'd bet on Santa Cruz before Napa.
One side note- this was in a lot with some other wines I really wanted. I basically didn't pay attention when bidding. But after I won I saw I had gotten a "2007 Ridge Monte Bello Chardonnay". Hey, that's nice. But when I opened box I sent a note to auction house:
This is not a request for refund or redress. But I got around to opening all those boxes. In lot 1157 the Ridge chard was the Estate, not the Monte Bello (label does say Monte Bello Vineyard on it in small print, but actual Monte Bello Chardonnays have Monte bello in same size font as Ridge and Chardonnay. This was under $100 for the lot, I am not upset, but you should give your auction specialists/catalogers a heads up for future because if that happened with a large lot I’m sure buyer would return/contest.
Have a good day,

No response! :)
