WTN: Old Vines Look at My Life

by David M. Bueker » Wed Jul 29, 2026 9:19 pm

  • 2019 Turley Zinfandel Old Vines - USA, California (7/28/2026)
From my late father’s cellar, there were two full, unopened cases of this when I first started working through the inventory. I gave some away, not because I disliked it, but just too much! Kept a fair bit, and just now got around to opening a bottle. Lovely, balanced, red-fruited Zinfandel, with subtle spice notes, and a gentle finish. Feels like it can be drunk anytime for a long time, but keep it cool, as it shows best just above cellar temp.

Over the past 5-10 years, people who's palates I trust have said that Turley's winemaking has been dialed back (which makes sense with Ehren Jordan behind the helm) but on the rare occasion when we've tried a Turley Zin, both Jean and I have found them to be too big and heavy for our palates still.

I doubt you would like them much, though their Cinsault is pretty interesting and not nearly so alcoholic.

And, changing subjects here, but what if Old Man were an Irish folk song? Someone answered that question (quite beautifully):

I'm not so quick to believe that's AI. And I have enough background in Celtic music to feel like I know why that recording was moving to me.

it's an Israeli guy cranking out dozens of these, pretty sure he doesn't have a band. Notice no credits other than himself.

Interesting, Dale. I heard it on CBC radio, and just presumed it was legit.

I pulled it up and almost instantly regretted it. The generic female singer voice is so completely wrong for that song. Ugh. And yeah, it’s likely AI.

The song is a good one, though the choice of voice between Young's rough one and that AI production is a hard one. I spent years attending Scottish/Irish folk shows so I guess I am predisposed to like that sort of presentation, but I also do like Neil's rougher offering.
