WTN: Riesling, GV, and red Burg with Sichuan

by Dale Williams » Wed Aug 05, 2026 3:59 pm

No wine with curry bluefish, shishitos, and assorted leftover vegetables

Tuesday was my first time at Sky Pavilion, a Szechuan place near Port Authority. A nice small group (including someone I hadn’t seen in likely 15+ years). Best dishes were pork with leeks, cumin lamb, and green beans with pork. Good dishes including fried dumpling, Singapore noodles with Shrimp, chicken dry hot pot, pork belly with water chestnuts, garlic shrimp etc. The duck and snow pea shoots were a bit disappointing, as was the service, but those who had been there before said it was an off night.

2023 Nikolaihof Hefeabzug Gruner Veltliner
Hint of spritz, saline, white pepper, citrus and pea. Fun. B+

2019 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Spatlese
Rich but racy, peach and pear with a little wet stone. B+

2001 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
Slightly elevated cork, and it slipped out too easily, but wine was sound. Auslese sweet, but with good underlying acids. B+/B

2001 JJ Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Auslese

Racy and electric, classic, citrus, slate, and smoke, very long. A-

2003 JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese.
Tropical and apricot fruit, warmth of vintage shows, but there is actually good acid underneath. B+B

2002 Matrot 'La Pièce sous le Bois' Blagny 1er
Earthy and rustic on the first go round, when I revisited after it had smoothed out, gotten more perfumed and sweet fruited. B- to start, B/B+ on next round

2002 Fourrier Les Petits Vougeots Vougeot 1er
Corked

2006 Mugnier Clos de la Marechale Nuits St George 1er
Usually I like this bottling a lot, but tonight it doesn’t sing. A bit of hard tannin, a light stewed note to the fruit, some road tar. Not sure I would guess Burgundy if blind. Gets better with air, but never loved (and I believe I own this), B- at best

There was a 2021 Selbach-Oster Kabinett that I THINK was Schlossberg, but I missed it until end and didn’t write down anything (including name) but enjoyed

2016 Hirtzberger Kirchweg Smaragd Gruner Veltliner
Big, grapefruit and Meyer lemon, a light oily note, long finish with a little ginger and stone. But it seems a little bit wound into itself, PnP I think some air would help. B for tonight, with room for improvement

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I have stashed most of my 2003 Prums so deep that I’ll be 80 by the time I can reach them.

I don't think it will be an issue. And I think I probably underrated this one because the 2001 was so brilliant beside it.

I thought that I recognized your face at the back of the table in the photo that Brad posted on FB. I can't think of too many foods to pair with Auslesen but those sichuan dishes sound like the ticket.
