WTN: Mass A Peel and a TJ's bargain

by Jenise » Mon Aug 10, 2026 9:34 pm

Opened tonight to go with slow-roasted salmon with a melted leek sauce over steamed Yu Choy:

2022 Massican Sauvignon Blanc
Weight and oily viscosity evident in the glass but the wine's almost stringent in the fruit department. That is, there's a lot of lemon and white grapefruit here, also a bit of diesel not dissimilar to what occurs in Riesling, but it might need to hang out in the fridge overnight uncorked to show everything it's got. That said, there's little to no herbaceousness or anything typical of sauv blanc; it's more muscat-ty. Which made me decide to try something else to go with my dinner:

2025 Trader Joe's Bandol Rose
Do I buy TJ wines? No. But I buy a lot of other things there so could I resist trying a Bandol Rose of all things? No! Very pale coral pink color. Hugely aromatic nose but not sweet (though I'm drinking it ice old and I know more fruit will show up as it warms), plays beautifully with complex flavors on the palate of red currant, rhubarb, straw and god knows what else. I'm too gobsmacked by the QPR at the moment to adequately describe the beauty coming out of this glass (I'm typing and drinking at the same time, don't shoot.) Price was around $10 (I'm thinking only $7.) I unfortunately taste a lot of low-end TJ wines because people I know and like are at that level, but wow, this one? It out-classes its price point in every way.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Makes me wonder what Bandol producer had a bunch of leftover production.

yes, I think the oversupply issue is pretty worldwide, and guess someone took a haircut to not devalue brand.

I went back for more of that Bandol today. I was incorrect about the price, it was $13. Not that it's a major difference, still a bargain for an impeccably balanced Bandol rose.

Yup, most of my favorites (Terrebrune, Bastide Blanche, Pibarnon, Tour du Bon) are now around $27-28 per bottle.

That's about what I paid for La Bastide Blanche. Passed on Terrebrune as offers were closer to $40.
