WTN: Andy turns 22

by Mark Lipton » Wed Sep 16, 2026 11:10 am

Monday night we celebrated our son's 22nd birthday with a late dinner with him after his grad school class let out. As is my custom, I opened a 2004 wine with our dinner, in this case a paella as requested by the guest of honor. The wine was my last bottle of the 2004 Laurel Glen Cabernet Sauvignon, which was in great shape -- far better in fact than the cork that splintered upon attempted removal -- and still quite youthful. Medium-full bodied, richly fruited with dark berry fruits and a strong nose of pencil lead, enough acidity to keep it fresh with silky-smooth tannins. All in all, a good night of wines, as we'd started the celebration with a bottle of NV Pierre Peters BdB Cuvée de Réserve that was absolutely delicious: crisp but substantial with a suave mousse and subtle toastiness.

Fun reading the original announcement--several names there I know. Dale, Bill S, and Anders among them. What an achievement raising a good child is these days. Sounds like you and Jean aced it. Congrats to the whole family.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Congrats. How cool to share these experiences and bottles with your son. My son is getting into the zone (recently turned 16), but he doesn't drink (an athlete) and there's no need for me to encourage him just yet! But, I do enjoy drinking my wine with him and telling/educating him about it! He seems to humor me...

Been there, done that, Rahsaan. That was Andy at that age, too. We would occasionally let him taste a wine as a way of demystifying alcohol (the major cause of death for 16-25 y.o. boys hereabouts). He's never shown a particular interest but still enjoys trying a bit with us. Interestingly, Gen Z and beyond seem to be far less interested in alcohol than previous generations. Most of Andy's friends are more interested in edibles and energy drinks than alcohol (but we've also had serious conversations about how all white powders look the same -- and who knows better than two Organic Chemistry PhDs? -- and how you should never trust any of them).

Yup, many WLDGers passed through AFW at one point or another. Safe to say that I might not be here had I not started there.

The stakes are so high these days!
