WTN: Morstein Code

by David M. Bueker » Wed Sep 16, 2026 8:10 pm

  • 2021 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Rheinhessen (9/14/2026)
Fascinating Kabinett that has the weight of a Spätlese, but the delicacy and moderate sweetness level of a Kabinett. The bracing acids of 2021 keep it dancing on the palate, and the depth carries through the mid-palate and finish. Structurally this feels like an Austrian Riesling, but it definitely drinks like a modern classic German Kabinett.

I've only had a couple of Wittmans - this makes me want to try more. Thanks

Might be difficult to follow up on this particular bottling, as per a conversation over on WB, it's unclear if they still make pradikat wines! (I don't see any online references post 2021)

I still have some older (e.g., 2001) Spätlese bottlings from Wittmann. Then there’s the Spätburgunder BA…

Dry's ok by me. By favorite Wittman was a Morstein GG. Maybe not quite as good as Keller, but much cheaper

Not much cheaper anymore.

Are you sure? Most of the Wittmann GGs (including Morstein) are under $100 in Germany (with the exception of La Borne) and under $150 in the US. But Keller Morstein seems to be many many multiples of that ($400-500), both in DE and the US.

Also, maybe I don't know the right sources, but Wittmann GGs are easy to buy (especially in DE), whereas Keller's top wines seem difficult to buy anywhere. Yet both places have roughly the same bottle output.

Regardless of the comparisons, I enjoy Wittmann's GGs for a powerful yet elegant and incisive take on German riesling.

OK, I guess Keller has gone beyond reason. I stopped paying much attention several years ago. Dentice buys it all anyway. ;)
