log in problems

by Sue Courtney » Sun Apr 01, 2007 1:27 am

In the past three or fours days, every time I browse to the WLDG, I am forced to log in. It just doesn't want to remember more.
I've gone and cleaned out all the cookies and so forth, but it hasn't made any difference.

Sue, maybe Randy can help, but I'm virtually certain that nothing has changed at all on our end. Is anyone else having a similar problem? Can Neil log in okay? I hope someone can come up with advice for you, but I am clueless.

Thanks Vakthang-K and welcome to the forum. Yes I do tick that box. I've been on this forum a year and this has only started happening.

It's been going on about 3-4 days. No changes at this end, AFAIK. Although Norton may have done something automatically. :x
Just wondered if anyone else having these problems. Neil has said he has had to re-log in now and then. He has just in from outside - as the sun sets on the day. Dialled up WLDG - and had to log in!!!!
It happened to me on the Auswine forum a while back and I cleared out all the cookies, which fixed the problem. So I cleared out all the cookies yesterday and problem not fixed - or maybe I missed something.

I look for Windows updates now and then, but not for some time now. I do NOT let MS install updates when they want to. I installed FireFox 2.0.3 just yesterday so it is not that. I tried to update Sue from IE 6 to IE 7, but it will not run on XP SP1, and I am still hestiant to install SP2. Maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and do it one of these days.

Sue has XP Home SP1 and IE 6.

I have XP Home SP2, and generally use the Maxthon brwser, which uses IE behind the scenes I think. Generally never have a problem wth it.

I just tried IE 7. Logged in, cleared all WLDG cookies, shut down and restarted, logged in again to set the cookies, repeated the shut down/restart and had to log in again.

maybe there's something in settings you should check and allow cookie's.

in IE : Tools / Internet Options / Privacy and set it to Low.

Yes, had a look at the settings. I don't use Low, but Medium. It has always been set this way. This will allow all required cookies.

Sue, I have had this problem ever since I switched to FireFox three months ago. It also occurs on a couple of other sites.

I've tried a bunch of fixes, and finally have just learned to live with it.

If I switch to MIE7, the sites that require sign-in sometimes recognize me, sometimes don't. I checked a minute ago, and MIE also required me to sign-into WLDG.

There must be something on my setup that causes the problem but haven't been able to discover what it is:

Couple of examples of sites that don't recognize me: Wall Street Journal, Atlantic, WLDG, OED.

Sites that do: Hotmail, New York Times.

Sites that put the username and password up, but require me to click on the sign-in button: Purple Pages, Fiona Beckett, WLDG if I visit again few minutes after signing out -- if I visit several hours later, I have to re-enter the username and password.

Obvously a local problem this end.

I had to login a couple of times recently, but I believe that was linked to a Firefox update. Everything seems to be back to normal now.

I have had no problems with either IE or Firefox. I tend to have more problems with Firefox so I mostly use IE.

I've had zero problems with logging in here. I use IE7 on WinXP with ALL the patches installed.

I tried using Firefox for a while, but I could never get Java installed on it, although I spent many frustrating hours trying. I use a Java app daily, so it was back to IE for me. I'm quite satisfied with it.

I'm having the exact same problem at work. I'm using IE and Windows XP. Each time I come to the WLDG I have to log in. Clearing cookies has not helped.

Sue, I had this problem in both FireFox and in IE. My Ie is version 7 so maybe a difference. but here are my IE settings.

Security set meduium high
Privacy set to medium, and I have the WLDG set as a site that is always allowed. (Cookies)

I also have "remember my password checked", and IE works well.

FireFox is slightly different, but still the settings are essentially the same. I had a problem sometime ago, and I said something about it, but it wound up making some trouble so I finally figured it out myself. I will be ready to help all I can to fix your problem. I know that you and Neil like IE, but If it were me, I would also download Firefox and give it a try.

Sue, I've been having the same problem with WLDG for the past several months. I'm using XP SP2 with up-to-date patches and IE7. This is the only web site causing me that problem. -- Clark

Randy,

My bookmark (or 'favourite' link) is
http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village

but I've also clicked on links in 'Topic Reply Notification' email messages, which takes me directly to a posting a thread.

BTW - my login problems seem to be fixed. I found two cookies and deleted them. They were ...
cookie:xxx@www.wineloverspage.com
cookie.xxx@wineloverspage.com

plus I also deleted every single file I could find from wineloverspage.com.

Using the delete cookies button at bottom of page did not work, so I manually deleted from cache, which seemed to work this time.

Cheers,
Sue

I also use a button on the Links bar, but my URL had a whole bunch of stuff after the link that Sue uses. I cut it to paste in this thread as an example but it has gone for good now.

I have replaced my link URL now, deleted the same cookies that Sue did, and now have a new set, which seem to do the job that is required of them in both IE7 and Maxthon. I.e. I remain logged in. Yay.

One other 'problem' that has raised it's head again is that a couple of times in these tests I have been logged in with a threaded view option. Not a major problem as a click of the button puts it back into Flat view. I know there was a lot of discussion about the lack of a threaded view, but personally I prefer the flat view. Just my preference. For some time several months back this happened every time. Then it stopped happening and I had forgotten about it. No problems.

In FireFox 2.0.3 I deleted SIX cookies, shut down, started up and logged in and all seems well there now. I might start using FF here now as I use it at work full time. I did have a problem with how FF handles tabs, but I may have got over that!! Maybe that was just in 1.5 and they have fixed the problems.

We will see what a new day brings.
Cheers,
Neil Courtney

All this is OK if one is literate with the technology!! Some are, a few are not and some like those I have PMed are saying "don`t have the time to mess around". We are going to lose some forumites here, mark my words.

Randy, I get to WLDG through the Front Page as follows:

Google wine lover -- returns:

http://www.wineloverspage.com/

Click on Forums -- returns:

http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/index.shtml

Click on the big logo for WLDG -- returns:

http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/index.php

if I'm already logged in.

I'll log out and see what the flow is, and edit it in here later.

Regards, Bob

Here's the flow after I'm logged out:

From Google searching on wine lover.

http://www.wineloverspage.com/

From Forums on Front Page:

http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/index.shtml

From Big Logo

http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/index.php

This shows the WLDG page with the log in button. Clicking on the log in button takes me to:

http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/login.php

This morning my User Name and Password were present; if I do not sign in for a day or two, the User Name and Password blanks are empty, but my FF browser will fill them in if I enter the first character of the User Name.

Clicking on Log in takes me to:

wineloverspage.com/forum/village/index.php?

I usually steer clear of these software threads as I have nothing to contibute from a technical point of view. I'll happily let the techies sort out this log in problemas well.
Personally, I never stay logged in (call it paranoia) and clear all my cookies at least on a daily basis. That said, I also can understand how this issue could be an irritant for those who like to be logged in continuously, but kind of shake my head that it is a big enough of an issue to cause some people to leave the forum. I can login in less than 5 seconds. What am I missing?
Cheers,
Bill
