2001 Langwerth von Simmern, Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen, Kabinett, Rheingau (1 02)
Simply outstanding. Pale gold hue that shimmers in the glow of the chandelier. The nose is aromatic with apricot and citrus in abundance. Unctuous and medium to full body/mouthfeel. The RS level is Spatlese-like. The acids are simply amazing and balance everything almost perfectly. Still some baby fat that another 5 years or so will fill out, but that is a really insignificant nit. A touch of Spring on an otherwise cold and dreary Easter. Priced at $16... I should have backed up the truck but didn't. Sigh.

Sounds delicious, but it doesn't sound anything like a kabinett.

David,
It is a declassed Spat. I wouldnt have pegged it as a Kab. either if the label hadn't told me so.
Nevertheless, quite deeelish.

Most, quite possibly all kabinetts from quality producers have the must weight to be spatlese these days. The exceptional producers are able to identify the lots that have some degree of kabinett elegance/delicacy and then bottle those as kabinett. (Johannes Selbach is a master at this.)

The easy way out is to bottle something that bears no resemblance to a kabinett and then crow about what great value the consumer is getting with the spatlese/auslese at a kabinett price.
