Robin and Randulo.... pic of my favorite corkscrew....

by Paulo in Philly » Wed Apr 11, 2007 12:22 am

This is my favorite corkscrew which I purchased in Bayreuth, Germany almost 10 years ago.... it works perfectly and opens most bottles without much effort. Robin - on TalkShoe today you may have described this type of corkscrew?

Looks like teflon on the worm to me. What do use on synthetic corks?

I try to avoid those type of corks if I can; if not, I do my best, even though it is a major pain! :?

Paulo, that appears to be the same principle as the trademarked Screwpull brand. It's okay - the best part about it is that it's virtually foolproof - but I did make a slight recommendation against it on the Shoe, on the basis of fragility. I don't know about your German brand, but I've had several Screwpulls break under use, and so I don't buy them any more.

I have seen others that were quite fragile, and one has to hold it not only in place but also together or it slips open. This one, however, is quite strong and feels quite secure; for someone as uncoordinated as me it is a blessing. There is a 5 year guarantee on the company's website (Brabantia). So far so good! If it breaks this week I will blame you for the bad karma!!

I have a partiality for this type of opener for corks and composite corks. Howerver I find that synthetics strip the teflon off the worms. Therefore I keep a monster waiters pal (1/2" across the claw) for these.

Didn't listen to the shoe, but as an owner of various corkscrews, unless I want the beauty of the Laguiole I always reach for one of the Pulltap (double-lever) waiter's corkscrews. Works well on long or short, natural or synthetic, and on regular bottles and those ones with the irritating lip. Worm is teflon-coated, but unlike the the screwpull seems to work well with plastic corks.
