WTN: good QPR Falanghina

Bluefish are here! Betsy celebrated the first of the season by broiling filets on a bed of scallions with a gin, lime, and butter sauce. OK, how's that for a tough match- oily fish, citrus, and gin?

Not a dish to bring out an expensive wine, but crisp acidity seemed to be the idea. In our $10 category let's try the 2005 Ocone Falanghina (Taburno). Nice acidity (I'm always a little surprised that Campanian whites are as crisp as they are), lighter body, clean pear fruit with a touch of mineral and grapefruit. Not as big as the Mastrobernardino or Feudi San Gregorio Falanghinas. Not a lot of complexity here, though there is a touch of that almond-nuttiness on the finish, but a very pleasant drink overall. B/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency

Dale, I love your notes! Italian whites rock as Otto would put it. They are very food friendy and friendly on the wallet too. Nice to hear this one worked for you.

Appreciate it. Kriss Reed got me hooked on Falaghina, but I don't know anything about the producers, so a good note is a bit of a godsend.

I enjoyed this, but if you're looking for bigger, more distinctively Falanghinal Falanghina, might look more toward FdSG and Mastrobernardino. Think of this as Pinon Tradition vs, those guys as Huet.

Falanghina has a variety of expressions, and some of the widely available examples are being 'juiced' by skin maceration and RS.

I import one that is grown on its own roots in the Campi Flegrei, just north of Naples, that is low in alcohol (12%), and very minerally, very light on its feet.

I too am a big fan of Italian whites (after S France). Current rave is the Scurati from Sicily, posted some TNs last year.
I have been quiet this week as I have the Snow Goose Festival coming up this weekend and play a key role.

Good buying coming up??! I am holding off whites so far as I have close to 8 mixed cases of whites in the cellar right now!! My upcoming birding/butterfly trip will put a dent into it somewhat hopefully. Usually pack 2 cases for social activities on the road!!!!!

Dale,

My Falanghina is called La Sibilla. They also make a Piedirosso, which bears some resemblance to a ripe Chinon. Both very useful food wines.

Campania is amazing.
