2005 Pali Wine Co. Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (4/25/2007)
My second bottle of Pali, and one of the more interesting Pinots to come out of the whole Central Coast Pinot explosion. Of course they had to use Oregon fruit to do it, but that's ok. Lots of focused red fruits as well as a much more expressive earthy component than in most of these new era Pinots. There's also a bit of transparency to the wine instead of just a hulking mass of fruit. The flavors are well balanced, and the alcohol is not the least bit intrusive. This is very well done. It also feeds my growing belief that I prefer domestic Pinots made with Oregon fruit to Central Coast wines.

There is also the issue of the 2005 vintage. I'm not aware of the conditions in Oregon, but this was my fourth or fifth 2005 wine from the Central Coast winemaking gang. I have universally preferred them to anything since the 2001 vintage. A premise is developing, but not yet fully formed.

Friends who had a Ken Wright 2005 Pinot from Oregon said it was stunning. I think 2005 is shaping up to be a winning vintage in Oregon.

What price did you pay for it? My problem with Oregon pinots is that all the rave reviews seem to have gone straight to the cash register. Except for a few, they have all climbed out of my price range.

I don't exactly remember, but it was around $40. Pali line prices their wines, with all at the same $40-$45-ish price.

I'm mostly done with the Central Coast Pinot gang, as I can get more pleasure from a cru Beaujolais for half the price...most of the time.

$40-50 is out of the ball park for me except for a Bordeaux or CdP or a Burg. I can't see spending that kind of money on New World juice.

I need to start drinking some cru Beaujolais. I know who to look for, I just need to pull the trigger on $20 for Bojo.

David, as I'm sure you know, but may be of interest to others, the winemaker for Pali is Brian Loring of Loring Wine Company fame.

Indeed I do. Brian is a great guy and a good friend, and I have liked a number of the wines he's made, but the 2003/2004 vintages were too much for me.
