Abbreviations! Grrrrrrrrrr! (rant - approach with caution!)

by Paulo in Philly » Thu May 03, 2007 12:33 pm

I get frustrated when I run into abbreviations that I cannot figure out. Would it be possible for all of you to share your most used abbreviations, and then I can compile them onto one reference list, and post it? It took me the longest time to figure out DRC as Domaine Romanee Conti, or CdR as Cotes du Rhone.....or has somebody already done this and I've totally missed it? I think if we have a reference list it would make this site more newbie friendly, unless all of us agree on no abbreviations, which I doubt most will want to comply. :?

As to abbreviations in general, I think we should generally try to only use abbreviations in a discussion after the whole word has been used. Once someone see Leoville las Cases or Nuits St. Georges, LLC or NSG is not too confusing (one would hope!).

On a Usenet forum a group of us tried to compile a list (thanks to Mark Lipton for spearheading), and included it in the FAQs:

Maybe Robin should include this on the FAQ IMHO? LOL!

That is a great solution, Dale: spelling out the word/name completely in the original post, and then feel free to abbreviate in our responses. That is a fantastic list. You have made my day!

CdP is Chateauneuf de Pape. VV is Vielles Vignes or Old Vines. Also VT is Vendange Tardive which means late harvest, generally a sweeter wine. SGN is Selection of Grains Nobles (special harvest of four grape varieties grown in Alsace and indicating botrytized grapes). I will sometimes put Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc in the title and P.N. or S.B. in the text (should be clear). It's the text messaging abbreviations that sometimes give me trouble. I know IMHO is In My Humble Opinion or Honest Opinion and BTW is By the Way and AFAIK is As Far As I Know but what is IIRC?

This is an appropriate thread to insert another reminder to identify the region for a wine--it is not self-evident to everyone reading the notes since we come with different levels of wine knowledge. Is that winery in California or Australia? Mussbacher is from Germany but is it from Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz or Nahe (the answer is Pfalz but true!) Where are the Santa Rita Hills (SRH) as opposed to the Santa Lucia Highlands (these I know partly because I used to live in California). And I could even use a reminder from time to time of whether this wine is from Tuscany or Piedmont or Alto Adige or from a Sangiovese clone or Corvina grape or Nebbiolo.

I can certainly see that you know your wine. Most of the guests who stay here wouldn't know the difference between Bordeaux and Claret.

g/l - grams per litre
abv - alcohol by volume, ditto for alc.
NZSB - New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc

I think we did have a thread like this a few years ago. Some of the ones I remember are:
FL - Finger Lakes (not Florida)
NOTL - Niagara-On-The-Lake
ML or MLF - Malo-Lactic Fermentation
VA - Volatile Acidity (vinegar), but it could be Vigrinia
TA - Total Acidity (measure of juice using titration)
OZ - Australia
RG - Robin
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

I guess it means what the writer intended it to mean which is how it gets confusing.

Peter, the former is correct. IIRC is If I Recall Correctly. I think I have a whole list of Acronyms for the internet, but I don't think many of them are for wine writing.
