exciting wine find

last night was the annual a2 winefest. rare wine bar had chevillon NSG blanc '04. had heard it was interesting - something about red grapes that had 'reverted' in the vineyard to white. not chard; but ... well, what a fascinating experiennce. had a very light salmon color even - not white grapes probably at all - but more gris like. tasted gris like as well. very light oak so the unique fruit really came through. nice balance. not at alll heavy but subtly flavorful. needs pretty tame food i should guess to really show. have to b uy some - though not cheap. also had 81 malartic and 83 duhart - both spot on!

Well, thats your Pinot Noir for you. Mutates more often than a Dr Who alien.

There was a Cabernet Sauvignon in Australia that started growing white grapes, they propagated it and registred it as a new variety , Cygne Blanc

Gouges also produces a NSG blanc from this sport.

My notes on the '02 Chevillon:
I brought this as a wine geeks could appreciate. Like the Gouges white NSG, this is a "sport" of Pinot Noir . But if I didn't know that, I'd happily assume this was a very good Chardonnay. Nutty and minerally with assertive acidity, a young wine that could use time but is quite nice now. Smooth creamy butterscotchy texture, would show well in a lineup of Meursault 1ers. B+/A-
