WTN: Gaston-Chiquet, Marcarini, Thackery

Dinner with my folks in Virginia last night:

Gaston-Chiquet Champagne NV Carte Verte Tradition
Disgorged 7/2005. Showing plenty of bright apple and citrus fruit. Delicious, easy to drink Champagne at a very good ($27) price. We've been consuming bottles of this specific disgorgement since release in fall 2005, and it's been spot on every time.

1996 Marcarini Barolo Brunate
Slight bricking at the rim, nose of meat, leather and red fruit. Very dry, and still pretty darned tight, but eventually gives up some fruit on the palate & gets more supple. Very good, but still not ready at age 11.

1997 Sean Thackery 'Orion'
Rosemary and eucalyptus on the nose, with emerging earthy notes after some airing. Dark black fruit and healthy tannins are still in evidence on the palate, but this has settled down from its very exuberant youth. Very well made wine.

Tonight I taste a Kosta-Browne Syrah. If I don't survive I wish you all well.

Thanks for sacrificing the Marcarini - yes none too surprised at it being tight. I could see good wines from this Piemonte vintage lasting for a long long time.

The best part - not my bottle! Mine will rest safely for at least another 5 years.

Where did you get the Gaston for $27!!!???? I assume you "backed up the truck"? What a steal!

I bought the Gaston-Chiquet on pre-arrival in 2005. It was about $24 a bottle with my case discount.

The Barolo was mine. I spotted it in a store just after release. What David and I have came from that purchase. This was the first I've tried.
