  • 2006 Josefina Syrah - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (7/1/2007)
12.5% $5 at Trader Joe's. Agglomerate plastic cork. Cellared & Bottled by Maddalena Vineyards. Odd strawberry-like nose, pretty funky, ponderous, top-heavy, alcoholic, and sweet, with a mercifully brief finish. Chilled cold (35F) it's inoffensive and acid makes it compatible with food. Fair.
  • 2006 Mount Tamalpais Vineyards Vin Gris - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Marin County (6/10/2007)
13.5%. $17 at Ferry Plaza Wine Merchants. Screwcap. 61% merlot, 28% pinot noir, 9% riesling. pH: 3.21 TA: 6.7 g/L. Color deeper than some German pinot noirs, electric pink. Watermelon nose, wonderfully crisp, but comes over heavily in flavor, though not body. Thanks to The Grub Report for the recommendation. Good with salmon and sauteed eggplant, even though it's not quite the provencal exemplar that I was hoping for. Good+.
