WTN: Chapel Hill Shiraz-Grenache 2005

McLaren Vale.

A 90-10 blend.

My first experience with Chapel Hill was with a wine known as the Vicar. Can't really recall what the composition was, but I recall that the first few bottles were not bad, but the wine didn't hold up to aging very well and the rest of the bottles were pretty flat and forgettable.

With a number of good reviews, I decided to take another chance with this wine.

Very dark purple, almost black, in the glass.

Rich and very soft, round and plush in the mouth, mocha, chocolate, very spicy (cinnamon, I think), black cherry and plums, some blackened-charred notes, quite tangy, peppery, black licorice.

Drying and tart on the finish.

Screwcap closure.

An incredibly rich, powerful and intense wine. Purchased at $18.95 (Canadian).
