Ménage à Trois

by Oliver McCrum » Fri Jul 13, 2007 3:15 pm

A friend just told me that he ate at a restaurant that was offering what they called a Ménage à Trois: three wines mixed in one glass.

Now I've heard everything.

Yquem, Petrus and 150 yr old Madeira I believe (though one can substitute Latour for the Petrus if one is saving one's pennies  )

Are they offering this from a dump bucket?

It's an actual wine...Folie a Deux (CA) makes a red, rose, and a white version. I'm not sure of the grapes in each, but we serve it at the restaurant I work at and I'll check on it next time I'm there.

I've tried a couple of these wines. I didn't care too much for the Red.(don't recall the exact blend of grapes) I do, however, enjoy their Rose on occasion. Runs $9.00- $11.00 where I live. Nothing fancy, just a nice hot weather quaff you don't have to think about.

My wife likes the red. I have found it to be too sweet. I will keep the rose in mind.

If this is indeed the Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois, then it's a known quantity, but it has changed since Trinchero bought that winery several years ago. In fact, I was in there with my ex-brother-in-law, a card dealer in a casino in Atlantic City, just before the property exchanged hands and they were having a real fire sale on the stuff. Back then, it wasn't half bad at $5.00 a bottle.
And now what?

The white has been called a poor man's Conundrum. It's similar in style but about half the price.

The white is actually pretty good. I'm not a huge fan of the red (too sweet for me) and I haven't yet tried the rose. All 3 are pretty popular at the restaurant, but the best part of this wine is listening to customers try to pronounce the name. My personal favorite was one woman who ordered the "man-aggie aye true-is" Ah, Pittsburgh...I'm going to miss this place when I move! :D

It may be an actual wine, but I'm referring to three actual wines, named (a Chablis, a RRV Pinot Noir, and another) mixed together.

Are those the three wines they mixed together?

Good god.

With the exception of a winemaking kit for home assembly of Champagne-inspired sparkling wine, the mixture sounds frightening..

I bought a Folie à Deux Ménage à Trois when I visited their winery in California back in....2000 I think. I then drank it about year or so later or so and it was quite good.
