2004 Rapet Pernand "Ile des Vergelesses"
Deep dark and rich on the nose. Not very thick but at first it has lots in common with Northern Rhone syrah, so smoky and porky and greasy. But not at all heavy and in fact in the opening hours the disjuncture between the dark colors/flavors and the thin lively texture makes it appear like a wine that is not fully together for my tastes. Eventually puts on weight with air and is a dark juicy fun drink, with relatively elegant acids. But, the smoky (oak-influenced?) flavor profile just doesn't work for me in this case.
2004 Chandon de Briailles Pernand Vergelesses "Ile des Vergelesses"
I definitely prefer this profile with structured floral and mineral fruit. But, it is quite tannic. More so than a bottle from several months ago that appeared slightly more generous, although it's tough to fully remember because that one was also more linear than round according to my notes. By the end of the night this was still not showing its best, remaining stern, crunchy, angular. A fine-enough dose of mineral fruit in the middle for my tastes (nothing extravagant, but respectable), but needs more evolution to show its best from what I can tell.
